Hughes was born in Waynesboro, Virginia, a small town in the foothills of the Shenandoah Valley.
Enlisting in the USN on his 17th birthday, tours of duty includ medical duty with the USMC, a tour in Vietnam and 5 years aboard the nuclear ballistic missile submarine, USS Frances Scott Key, SSBN 657. After retirement, he obtained certification as a Physician Assistant from the Medical University of SC followed by graduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
The author now resides in Salisbury, NC where works as a physician Assistant at the William “Bill” Hefner VAMC and looking forward to retirement in October 2012.
