Joel M. Reed is best known for his outrageously macabre, full length, low budget feature BLOOD SUCKING FREAKS which has received both critical acclaim as well as arousing indignant outrage in international release, it is now considered a cult film classic. Mr. Reed was honored at the 1998 San Jose Film Festival along with Barry Sonnerfeld and John Schlesinger. IN 2001 he was given a day at Los Angeles Cult Film Festival at the Palace Theater. Many of his films are being lauded throughout the world. Among many of his other motion picture productions has been Dragon Lady, which was described by Variety as classic film noire. His play Barry Moses' Bar Mitzvah was produced in Los Angles. Four new films of his are in pre-production. Subversive Video has reissued a DVD of his Bloodbath. His film Gamma 693 is being re-released as Zombie War Games in Germany in 2012 with a new sound track. His films Career Bed and Sex by Advertisement are being bootlegged extensively receiving great reviews in retro film publications. An authorized DVD is in the works with a running comment by the Master and other extras.
He has been active on and Off-Broadway, both as a producer and playwright, and has produced live and filmed industrial presentations for major corporations. As an author, his only non-fiction book was, TRUMPH, THE MAN AND THE MYTH. A genre novel of his, The Shanghai Jew, will be reprinted and on sale in September. He is completing Zombie Wall.
He lectures extensively at colleges and film conventions. He was at the Nighthawk Cinema on Jan 29, 2012, to signing autographs and doing a Q and E. A Joel M. Reed Day is in the works at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles.
Known for his humor, he has contributed short stories and articles to many publications and maintains a high profile on the World Wide Web. He is currently writing a book about his adventures in cult films and preparing a new script of his for production involving that milieu and its many disturbed fans and hangers-on. A native New Yorker he is a devoted fly fisherman and has written extensively on that sport.
He has been acting professionally since 1953. His most recent appearances were as himself in "I Spill your Guts," a heckler in Supernaturalz, Mario in Class Reunion. Mr. Peterman in George Snow's "Leading Lady. Uncle Joe (lead) in Louis Affortunato's Uncle Joe a gothic horro. IN 2010 as an Old Vet at VFW Club in Ghoul Cookie Girl Scout Zombie Massacre." And in that same year - the Old Guy in David Lynch's I Know [MUSIC VIDEO] by Kevin Sean Michaels. And as himself in Masters of the Grind opening this year. He sings and dances in Charisses Mills new video "Get a Little Funky" and plays a panhandler in the Codette Project Rock Parody Video. He has just repeated himself in David Lynch's "So Glad" music video.
He has been deeply involved on Broadway and in Hollywood since 1954.
