Paul Morantz

Paul Morantz is an attorney specializing in destructive cults and brainwashing. A pioneer in the field, his cases have led to precedent-setting rulings; he has been involved, in often surreal ways, with many notorious cults, including the Manson family, the Symbionese Liberation Army, the People's Temple, the Moonies and the Church of Scientology. He is perhaps best known as the survivor of an attempted assassination when members of drug rehab-turned-cult Synanon stuffed a rattlesnake in his mailbox. Mr. Morantz recounts his experiences in this unusual legal niche in the recently released, "Escape: My Lifelong War Against Cults," with co-author Hal Lancaster. Mr. Morantz has also penned a number of major magazine articles, including a Rolling Stone account of the rise and tragic fall of the surf rock group Jan and Dean, which he adapted for the TV movie, "Deadman's Curve."
