Schuyler Schultz

Schuyler has maintained life-long interests in cuisine, culture, and writing, always seeking to develop relationships with local producers wherever he works. As a chef, his food preparations continually reflect his respect for fine ingredients and the people who produce them. Extensive travel in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia provided opportunities to sample diverse cuisines and the gastronomic cultures surrounding them--experiences that continually inform his cooking, which strives to reflect the culinary personality of a region and its people.

From his small hometown of Decorah, IA, to the Las Vegas Strip, and finally to San Diego's thriving craft beer scene, Schuyler has worked to showcase the dedication of artisanal producers and the role they play in local food communities. His writing reflects this, and seeks to help readers discover the joys of participating in America's vibrant craft food and drink movement.

In San Diego, while his wife, Amy, sings with the San Diego Opera, Schuyler works as the chef and beverage director of an independent neighborhood restaurant and also collaborates with AleSmith Brewing Co. as their culinary director.

"Beer, Food, and Flavor: A Guide to Tasting, Pairing, and the Culture of Craft Beer" is his first book.
