John McCumber

John McCumber is Distinguished Professor of European Languages and Transcultural Studies at UCLA. His Ph.D. is in Philosophy and Greek from the University of Toronto.

He has taught in philosophy departments there and at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, Northwestern University, UCLA, and John Carroll University. He has also taught in the German Departments of Northwestern University and UCLA and in the Classics and Political Science Departments at UCLA.

He was Chair of German at Northwestern 1999-2002 and was awarded the Koldyke Chair of Teaching Excellence there.

Three of his books have won Choice Outstanding Academic Title Awards: "Metaphysics and Oppression (1999), "Reshaping Reason" (2005), and "Time and Philosophy: a History of Continental Thought." Choice proclaimed his introductory history of Continental philosophy, "Time and Philosophy" (2011), to be the"best volume of its kind."

He lives near the California surf, and plays the guitar with occasional brilliance.
