Mick Maslen was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, in 1946. He is married with 2 very successful sons, and 6 grandchildren. Until retiring in 2008, he taught drawing and painting to art students, and was a practicing artist, having regular exhibitions of photographs and paintings. In 2009 he was largely responsible for the content of the Guardian newspapers Guide to Drawing. Unfortunately in 2009 he was diagnosed with a severe Parkinsons tremor, which has greatly limited the controlled use of his hands. He anticipates having deep brain surgery in 2013.
