Karina Schaapman

Karina Schaapman is the creator behind The Mouse Mansion, a global phenomenon that began as a labor of love and evolved into an internationally acclaimed children’s brand. Her work has touched the lives of millions, with over 21 original books translated into 27 languages and more than 1 million copies sold worldwide. Schaapman’s intricate miniature creations, made from cardboard boxes and upcycled materials, serve as the enchanting backdrop for the stories of Sam and Julia, the beloved mouse characters who embody themes of friendship, resilience, and community.

Inspired by her own challenging childhood in the Netherlands, Schaapman sought to create a world of warmth and inclusivity for children. Growing up in poverty as the daughter of an Indonesian immigrant, she overcame adversity through creativity and determination. These experiences are woven into her work, reflected in the diversity and depth of The Mouse Mansion's universe.

What started as a single handmade structure has grown into a family-led enterprise. In 2017, Schaapman’s children joined her in managing The Mouse Mansion Company (TMMC), overseeing global licensing, product development, and the launch of an award-winning animated TV series. Schaapman remains at the heart of the creative process, crafting stories and dioramas that continue to inspire children and families around the world.

From her Amsterdam-based Mouse Mansion Brand Store to her international product lines and animated series, Schaapman’s work celebrates imagination, kindness, and the boundless potential of storytelling.
