The one thing that unites all of my writing is a deep interest in sacred experience. I am fascinated by the way spiritual gifts manifest in people's lives in the midst of everyday, human struggles. I am drawn to those moments when people are transformed by the influx of powers beyond themselves, and one of the great challenges I face as a writer is conveying the numinous light of transcendence in a realistic, believable manner.
I am an English Professor, teaching creative writing, American Literature and Native American Literature. As I grew up, I always wanted to be a writer, but I didn't think anyone could make a living at it. So, I pursued a Ph.D. in literature so I could teach. However, the impulse to put experience into language continued to compel me to write in my spare time, and I still find the deep, dreamy "zone" of writing to be one of the most fulfilling states of awareness.
