Al Steuter

Author Bio-Sketch - Al Steuter was the second of 12 children raised on a diversified crop and livestock farm in Cuming County, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969 to 1972, including a tour in Vietnam on artillery forward observer teams. Following his service, Al received a B.S. in Wildlife Science from the University of Idaho, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Rangeland Science from Texas Tech University. Over the next 25 years as a staff member of The Nature Conservancy, he authored or co-authored over 30 peer reviewed technical papers and six book chapters on various aspects of grassland, fire, and grazing ecology. IN THE LAST YEARS OF A LOST WAR is Al's first book for general audiences. Currently, he and his wife Lois own and operate their family ranch in the Nebraska Sand Hills. In addition to working on a second book, Al does private consulting within the U.S. and internationally, serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations, and enjoys sharing his love of wildlands with his children, grandchildren and friends.
