These are my personal stories of losing language in a stroke. I'm a clinical psychologist, baby observer, bird watcher. My sense of self survived by using these skills to reflect as I walked through a wilderness without road signs. Through the unbelievable isolation from community without language, I discovered many non-word languages. These supported my efforts to recover language and also became gifts that expanded my life immeasurably.
Still a psychologist, now a painter, print maker, writer and poet, I have gone beyond my wildest imagination! I live with my white Standard Poodle Service Dog, Handsome Dude, who keeps me from going overboard and do what I shouldn't be doing. He holds the prize for helping me through.
