I am a full professor in statistics education and educational technologies in the Faculty of Education at the University of Haifa, Israel. I am the head of the Department of Learning and Instructional Sciences. My research interests draw upon two central aspects of human life: Statistical thinking and technology. Focusing on these two aspects in my research, I study (a) students’ statistical learning and the development of their statistical reasoning as it occurs in the social context of the classroom; and (b) the role of innovative technological tools in offering new forms of understanding, learning and communicating. I have been pursuing these themes in classroom studies that emphasize inquiry, reasoning, creativity, communication and collaboration, and the use of notations and technological tools.
I received my Ph.D. in statistics education from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2001. My research has been published in two books, seven edited books, six special issues of journals and 140 articles and chapters. I co-authored with Joan Garfield the book Developing Students’ Statistical Reasoning: Connecting Research and Teaching Practice (2008), co-edited the first International handbook of research in statistics education (2018), and authored 25 statistics textbooks for school age children.
I am a recipient of grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC), British Academy, European Commission, Israel Science Foundation (ISF), and Minerva Stiftung.
I have been active in the international statistics education community. I served as a Vice President of the International Association for Statistical Education and was nominated recently as its President-Elect (2021). I am the co-founder (with Joan Garfield) and a co-chair (with Katie Makar) of the International Collaboration for Research on Statistical Reasoning, Thinking, and Literacy (SRTL), a leading research group in the area of statistics education.
