Alec Charles has served as Professor & Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Winchester, Professor and Head of the School of Arts at the University of Hull, and Head of Media at the University of Chester. He has previously taught at universities in Eastern Europe, Japan, Cornwall and Luton. He has worked as a print journalist and has made documentaries for BBC Radio 3. He has edited 'The End of Journalism', 'The End of Journalism Version 2.0', 'Media in the Enlarged Europe' and 'Media/Democracy: A Comparative Study', and has authored 'Interactivity: New Media, Politics & Society', 'Interactivity 2', 'Out of Time: The Deaths and Resurrections of Doctor Who', 'Political Animals: News of the Natural World' and 'Underwords: Re-reading the Subtexts of Modernity'. He has published articles in British Journalism Review, Journalism Education, British Politics, Science Fiction Studies, Science Fiction Film and Television, Journal of Popular Television, Utopian Studies, Children's Literature Review and Journal of Contemporary European Research, and has also contributed to 'Directory of World Cinema: Britain', 'The Films of Tod Browning', 'The Films of Edgar G Ulmer', 'Analysing David Peace', 'Reinventing Ourselves: Contemporary Concepts of Identity in Virtual Worlds', 'The Happiness Illusion: How the Media Sold Us A Fairytale', 'The Routledge International Handbook of Jungian Film Studies', 'Teaching Narrative', 'Doctor Who and Race' and 'Time and Relative Dissertations in Space'. He has also served as co-convenor of the Political Studies Association Media & Politics Group.
