Howell J. Malham Jr.

Howell J. Malham Jr. is a founder and managing director of GreenHouse, The Center of Social Innovation.

The center provides an expansive platform to explore and research the root causes of social challenges; to design new methods for understanding, approaching, and solving these challenges; to provide cognitive-teaching tools and resources for entrepreneurs, academicians, researchers, and students of innovation; and to open new channels to disseminate models to scale the impact of positive, measurable change.

Currently, GreenHouse is partnering with the United States Department of State, New America, and Bretton Woods II on the Trillion Dollar Challenge, and with the Susan Poorman Blackie Ovarian Cancer Foundation on a 12-month research and innovation project--the first step in a larger initiative to create a much-needed resource for ovarian cancer patients and their families.

Howell is an Innovator in Residence at the University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. His pioneering efforts paved the way for several GreenHouse-led initiatives, which to date include the creation of the field's first professional Ph.D. in leadership; the first graduate nursing program housed in a school of social work; and the implementation of new methodologies to teach the practice of social innovation to faculty and students.

As co-founder of Insight Labs, the world's first philanthropic think tank, Howell explored and studied an array of intractable social problems at close range. He partnered with the United States Department of State, NASA, Harvard Medical School, The Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education, Aegis Trust, Kigali Genocide Memorial, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Boeing, Starbucks, and more than 50 other organizations and institutions to uncover new insights on the true nature of social problems, and co-designed a radical new approach for tackling them.

A recovering brand strategist, he worked with Walgreens, Allstate, Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox, LEGO, and HarperCollins. He has also written for The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and Fast Company.

Howell is the author of "I Have a Strategy (No You Don't), The Illustrated Guide to Strategy," published by Jossey-Bass.

He graduated with a BA in Journalism from The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Arizona State University.
