Jaime Benson was born in Montevideo, Uruguay(1955). Son of an american lutheran missionary and a puerto rican social worker. Lived in Mexico and the continental United States before settling in Puerto Rico since 1970. Former student leader and socialist militant. Completed his Ph. D in Economics (1993) at University of Massachusetts in Amherst. The title of his doctoral dissertation is: Capitalist Regulation and Unequal Integration: The Case of Puerto Rico 1945-1990. Former Chief Editor of Ceteris Paribus, Journal of Socioeconomic Research in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, Director of the Unit of Economic Research in the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras and President of the General Council of the Editorial of the University of Puerto Rico. Has published several academic essays on the institutional changes of US and global capitalism and its effects on Puerto Rico. Two that stand out are, Puerto Rico: The Myth of the National Economy in Puerto Rican Jam: Essays on Culture and Politics, Edited by Frances Negrón-Muntaner and Ramón Grosfoguel (Minnesota University Press, 1997), and Sailing on the USS Titanic: Puerto Rico's Unique Insertion to Global Economic Trends in None of the Above, Edited by Frances Negrón-Muntane (Palgrave Macmillan,2007). He is currently Full Professor of Economics at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus.
