Howard Lakin was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of a nuclear physicist and a grade-school teacher. After a childhood spent in Los Angeles, he attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he earned B.A. degrees in Comparative Literature and Communications in 1974.
After graduating from UCLA Film School with an M.F.A. degree in 1978, he began his career in earnest, working first as a freelance TV writer, finally serving as a full-time supervising producer and head writer for hit shows like Dallas and Falcon Crest. In 1994, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he founded Lakin & Marley Rare Books, a closely-held company which seeks and sells Victorian literary first editions and manuscripts, as well as film-related literary material.
He is married, has two grown children, and lives in Marin County, California.
