Janet K. Humphreys

Dr. Janet Humphreys was born in Akron, Ohio and moved with her family to Argentina at the age of eight. Living just outside the multi-cultural city of Buenos Aires, she was exposed early on to a diversity of political ideas and religious beliefs. An early interest in international relations led her to return to the U.S. and earn an undergraduate major in Political Science at Stetson University. She also pursued studies at the University of Toronto and at York University in Canada, and at the University of New South Wales in Australia. After working for several years as a social worker and teacher, she returned to college at Florida State University, and obtained a master’s degree in Counseling and Human Systems, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. She has since worked as a psychologist in the prison system, at mental health centers, and in her own practice, doing disability evaluations for social security. Her encounters with the Ku Klux Klan and the total lack of protection law enforcement provided, led Dr. Humphreys to return to her early political interests and write her story. She recently retired from her psychology practice and hopes to start a center for the study of religious persecution and a refuge for those persecuted by Christian hate groups. She will continue advocating for the reform of the US law enforcement and prison systems and raise awareness of the dangers posed when religious radicals infiltrate our government, and our separation of church and state is compromised.
