I have always loved books. Reading was truly fundamental for my entire family. Mom, Dad, and all of my siblings. Anything we could get our hands on back in the day when almost all of our reading materials had to be checked out of the local library. Dr. Suess, followed by the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and Nancy Drew. Those young adult mystery series ultimately gave way to Robert Heinlein, Sir Conan Doyle, and pretty much every other major science fiction and mystery writer.
I owe thanks to Stan Lee and Marvel Comics for the early introduction to lots of big (polysyllabic) words. Although the Thor titles have to fade at least some of the heat for my tendency to write in the passive voice.
J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, and Robert Jordan are always on my willing to re-read list.
My favorite authors, at present, include Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks, Patrick Rothfuss (we're anxiously waiting, Pat), Ben Aaronovitch, and Daniel O'Malley.
My most recent book, Sovereign Citizen, is in the historical fiction genre.
Be prepared before you start the novel.
It is positively a beast of a book. Around 165,000 words-so somewhere between a Dan Brown novel and a Ken Follett novel. Two separate timelines, Napoleonic Europe and the present.
There are approximately nine point of view characters.
Before I even started writing, I spent several hundred hours on the historical research.
Hang in there until Chapter 37 (out of 137). Establishing character arcs in the different time lines takes more than a few pages.
When Ish finally hits the French Quarter, the narrative takes off like a rocket.
In both timelines.
For all of the characters.
And, trust me, one of these nights at Trivia, when the all-in final question is about modern European History, you're going to be the unquestioned team hero because of some factoid you remember from reading Sovereign Citizen.
My four prior novels all fall in the fantasy/science fiction genre:
2012 - Ring of Truth
2015 - Scavengyr Hunt: Book I of the Tyrning Cycle
2017- Wytch Hunt: Book II of the Tyrning Cycle
2020 - Treasyre Hunt: Book III of the Tyrning Cycle
