Greer Noble: Storyteller, Adventurer, and Chronicler of Africa’s Wildest and Most Wonderful Tales

If you’re searching for someone who can turn a lion encounter, a nervy cup of coffee, or a legendary campfire yarn into an unforgettable narrative—look no further than Greer Noble. Born and raised in the wild heart of Africa as a third-generation local, Greer grew up with leopards literally on her doorstep (give or take an antelope), a pianist mother, and a father who traded his love for hunting to become a passionate conservationist. Her upbringing with her two older brothers in Rhodesia—now Zimbabwe—instilled both an adventurous spirit and a deep love for sharing (and sometimes surviving) a great story.

Greer’s journey reads like one of her novels. From early days as a photographic model, to designing, building and running holiday resorts—where she discovered that velvet cushions don’t always deter warthogs—her career has always been beautifully unpredictable. She’s been behind the scenes (and sometimes right in front of them) for movie shoots, most notably when Clint Eastwood’s White Hunter Black Heart took over her family's Lake Kariba hotel. That cinematic flair no doubt fuels her writing even now.

Her first book, Veiled Madness, began on a three-month sabbatical amid hippos and herons on the shores of Lake Kariba, Matusadona National Park. Creativity long kept under wraps through Rhodesian bush war years, her experiences as a reservist, privy to top-secret intrigue still provide rich material for her gripping fiction.

A cottage-building adventure on Africa’s East Coast spurred her next book, Checkmate (or Checkmate Conspiracy, for those who caught the title swap). Each location, each adventure brought new stories, new friends, and plenty of plot twists.

Her greatest literary expedition, however, was the creation of My Funny Africa—another five-star accomplishment, a collection that became her passion project for three years. Determined to preserve Africa’s most side-splitting, awe-inspiring and sometimes terrifying campfire stories before they vanished, Greer chased down 48 friends: professional game guides, renowned authors, daredevil pilots, conservationists (among them, legends Jane Goodall and Will Travers of Born Free), journalists, a few relatives, previous hotel guests turned lifelong friends, and even her own husband. To pin down some of these characters, as wild as the terrain the they loved, to put pen to paper, took nothing short of bribery and blackmail. Each contributed an hilarious or astonishing anecdote to what became a bible for safari-hungry readers, wildlife enthusiasts, and amateur conservationists. The collection now boasts 80 authentic stories from 50 contributors, including herself.

Bringing My Funny Africa to life didn’t end with the tales—besides editing, sensitive to not change the essence of each real life experience, Greer gathered five talented artists, three award-winning; a school friend, a relative and a safari guide, describing and collaborating remotely on unique illustrations for every single story. Two contributors did their own artwork. The result is a vibrant, laughter-filled, often nerve wracking, sometimes heartbreaking tribute to Africa’s people and wildlife.

The bush has its tragic side too. Among the contributors is the late Rory Young of Zambia—a devoted anti-poaching advocate and friend, who lost his life trying to protect the little forest elephants of Burkina Faso, a sacrifice that underlines Greer’s dedication to giving voice to these passionate storytellers. She knows how important it is to capture these tales while we still can—before they are lost forever to the African winds and fireside embers.

Greer’s own family—her daughter, son, and two grandsons—are also cut from adventurous cloth, now scattered across the globe. Greer, living nomadically, gathers new stories (and possible plot lines) from remote corners in Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia, the Indian Ocean, and beyond. You’ll find her at home in a tent, a cottage, or an airport lounge—scribbling, chatting, and sipping a strong cup of coffee.

Always inspired, Greer is working on her next true story—a tale so unbelievable she’s convinced Hollywood will come calling (again).

Fun Greer Facts:

• Survived a goat invasion at her river home (Gertie was a diva).

• Once ended a mongoose-guest standoff at her first resort, with a flapping fish bribe.

• Still believes adventure and creativity are best fueled by good humor, biltong (Afrikaans name for traditional South African snack of air-dried slices of meat), and a pint or two.
