I used to spend a lot of time waiting.
When you’re a medic, you live in a world of endless boredom interrupted by episodes of intense terror. When I was in the army and jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, we called it hurry-up-and-wait. There is no in-between. In many ways it’s like a sniper’s trigger; when you slowly squeeze it you know what’s coming, but it’s still a surprise when it happens. While somewhat exciting, it’s not exactly good for your blood pressure.
To fill the time between calls, I could have stared at the TV, doom-scrolled social media, or simply stared at the walls. Instead, I chose to write stories.
One day I left a story behind while I flew off to a call. When I got back it was being passed around by a bunch of firefighters. My protests fell on deaf ears as I watched them read a page and pass it down. Since it was twelve-to-one, I gave up and waited.
Later that night the Chief visited me. He laid the manuscript down and said I needed to send it in. I scoffed and told him it was just something to fill the time. He asked me a question.
“Did you notice the TV hasn’t been on all day?”
That never happens. I got me thinking: If I could pen a story that grabbed the attention of a dozen firemen, could I do it on a bigger scale?
Turns out I could.
That book, now titled Closure, has earned me enough to become a full-time writer. It has over 32,000 reviews and still outsells my other books. Since that day I’ve written over a dozen more and my hard drive has enough outlines and story ideas that I’ll need to live to be 200 before they are exhausted.
So, if you like political, medical, or vigilante thrillers give my Jack Randall series a try. If you are into post-apocalyptic tales try my Half a World series.
If you’d like to hear more about my books, get some inside info on the characters, or just keep up on what I’m writing next, visit my website or find me on social media.
If you keep reading them, I’ll keep writing them.
