Grace is a registered tribal citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. She earned a baccalaureate degree in English with a minor in Native American Studies and a master's degree in English Literature, both from Northern Michigan University. She then graduated a third time from NMU with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing focusing on creative nonfiction. She taught Native American Literature at Ferris State University in the summer of 2004 and has taught the Native American Experience course at NMU nearly continually since January of 2005. She wrote curriculum for and continues to teach the History of Indian Boarding School Education course. More recently, she created and continues to teach a course titled American Indian Humor. She edited Voice on the Water: Great Lakes Native America Now with co-editor Rebecca Tavernini. The project was a Michigan Humanities Council, Northern Michigan University (NMU), and NMU Press joint, two and a half year project. Grace has lived most of her life on the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
