Brian Sloan

Brian Sloan read for his BA in Law and LLM at Robinson College, Cambridge, before doctoral studies at Gonville and Caius College, supervised by Professors Kevin Gray and Jens Scherpe. He was Bob Alexander Fellow at King's College, Cambridge (2009–12). He returned to Robinson in 2012 as Director of Studies and Fellow in Law, and was appointed Assistant Professor in Property Law at the Cambridge Law Faculty in 2021. He is due to be promoted to Professor of Property and Family Law from October 2026. His research interests include informal carers in comparative private law, the regulation of adult relationships, property law in the domestic sphere, the law of succession and adoption. His first monograph, Informal Carers and Private Law (Hart, 2012), was awarded a Yorke Prize in 2014. His work on adoption was cited by the Supreme Court in Re B (a child) [2013] UKSC 33. He is Vice-Chair of the Cambridge Socio-Legal Group, and a Deputy Director of the Cambridge Family Law Centre.
