David Correia

David Correia is a writer and Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of New Mexico whose work unearths dramatic and compelling stories of land speculation, labor struggle, and the very making of America. Through meticulous scholarship and beautiful prose, his three monographs, Properties of Violence (2013), An Enemy Such as This (2022), and Set the Earth on Fire (2024), bring to life the forgotten struggles of working people in rural America. Supported by a Lannan Residency Fellowship, Henry Belin du Pont Fellowship, the Adele Hast Fellowship in American History, and many others, his writing transports readers into places and pasts shaped by violent struggles for land and livelihoods. His work asks who has the right to claim the earth. The stories he tells suggest that property claims are never settled, deeds are never quiet, and resistance is always present.
