I blame Dan Dare (The Eagle comic circa 1964). Him and Spiderman and my dad. They fired my imagination and encouraged me to make stuff up and scribble it down when I was still a kid. Years later, as luck would have it, the universe conspired to invent punk rock just as I formed a band, so although I couldn’t really sing or play any instruments, I was finally able to make use of the crazy doodlings that filled the notebooks, that filled the folders, gathering dust beneath my bed. Wild times. By then I'd discovered Kafka, Tristan Tzara and Stanislavski, and if that sounds like an odd combo, who would have thought that playing tunes on crockery with cutlery and power tools, dressed in a lab-coat, and singing about left-handed polar bears would lead me to the Royal College of Art. While there I bagged a MA Distinction, produced a bunch of short films (including a BAFTA winner), and then headed off to Hollywood as a screenwriter.
These days the crazy doodlings are taking shape as novels. July 2014, publishing giants Simon & Schuster unleashed the first of them, a fantasy adventure entitled: The Savage Kingdom Book One. I redesigned the cover for the 2021 reissue of #TSK1 and the forthcoming #TSK2.
As of 2022, I'm working on a debut graphic novel.
