Don A. Pittman

Don A. Pittman is Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean, and the William Tabbernee Professor of the History of Religions at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa. An ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he holds two advanced degrees from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in the History of Religions from the University of Chicago Divinity School.

Before joining the PTS faculty in 2000, Dr. Pittman taught for ten years at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where he also served as Associate Dean of Brite Divinity School, and, subsequently, seven years at Tainan Theological College and Seminary in southern Taiwan, where he also served on the regional faculty of the Southeast Asia Graduate School of Theology.

In addition to numerous publications related to the history of religions and interfaith studies, Dr. Pittman was the primary author and editor of the textbook and reader, Ministry and Theology in Global Perspective: Contemporary Challenges for the Church, and the author of the widely-cited monograph, Toward a Modern Chinese Buddhism. Among his most recent works are the articles "Clippings from World Call: Disciples Perspectives on Religious Pluralism, 1919-1940,” and “Buddhism, Politics, Modernization, and Globalization in Contemporary Taiwan: A Review Essay.” He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Buddhist-Christian Studies.
