Mathai Joseph

Mathai Joseph studied in Bombay, Cardiff and Cambridge. He was one of the early computer scientists at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. He spent research periods in France, the UK and the US. Later, he had a chair in computer science at the University of Warwick in the UK. The draw of the homeland became compelling and he returned to India and became head of research at Tata Consultancy Services, India's largest IT company. Dead to Reason is his first novel (2017; available on Amazon Kindle). It is a detective story about the murder of Rani Diwanjee in Mumbai in 1995 and the search for the killer by Inspector Suryaprakash and her old friend Clovis Cleetus. The novel spans two periods: 1975 when Clovis was in college studying mathematics in Bombay during the Emergency and Rani was his tutor, and 1995 when the politician-builder nexus ruled Mumbai.

He has written, edited and published several technical books and numerous papers, as well as newspaper articles and columns, and given talks at universities in many different countries. He was the first Indian to be elected to the Council of the Association for Computing Machinery where he was a member-at-large from 2008-12. He received the ACM Presidential Award in 2010.

He is married and has a son and daughter. He and his wife now live in Pune, India.
