James A Coffman

James A. Coffman (b. 1959 in Arlington, Virginia) is a developmental biologist and Associate Professor at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, in Salisbury Cove, Maine. He has lived in many places, including Lexington, Kentucky (where he grew up); Zurich, Switzerland (where he attended high school); Toronto, Ontario; Northfield, Minnesota; Durham, North Carolina; Pasadena, California; and Kansas City, Missouri. He earned a B.A. from Carleton College and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Duke University, and was a postdoctoral research fellow at the California Institute of Technology. He is also a musician and songwriter, performing regularly with several bands covering a variety of musical genres.
