Vania Ceccato

Vania Ceccato is a Brazilian–Swedish professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. With a passion for making cities safer, more inclusive, and sustainable, her work explores how crime and fear shape people’s everyday lives, from city streets to rural communities and public transport systems.

Her work stands out for its use of innovative methods, including geographical information systems (GIS), remote sensing, virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and crowdsourced data to better understand safety in the built environment. Ceccato is active internationally; she served as an ambassador for the British Society of Criminology, contributes extensively to public discourse, and presented at TEDxKTHWomen on how architecture and urban planning can enhance safety for women and all residents through thoughtful design.

When she’s not writing, you’ll find her speaking at conferences, mentoring students, or walking through cities, always with a critical eye on how public space can be made safer.
