Christopher Scholz, a native of Northern California, received a B.S. in geology at the University of Nevada and a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a Professor of Geophysics at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and one of the world's leading experts on the physics of earthquakes. His monograph, "The Mechanics of Earthquakes and Faulting" is considered the authoritative work on that subject. He has studied earthquakes extensively in Japan, New Zealand, southern Africa, the western U.S., and the island arcs of the Pacific.
