My grandfather on my mom’s side was a master storyteller. He kept me in stitches when I was a kid, and I remember thinking that when I reached his age I wouldn’t have nearly his arsenal of yarns. How could I have guessed that in the decades to come I would make a living by, yes, telling stories? But not stories about me. Stories about others.
As a small-market newspaperman, I wrote about politicians and criminals, singers and sports stars. Most of my stuff was local or regional, but I did attend and report on two presidential speeches, occasionally rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in American politics, cover a football game at Notre Dame Stadium, and interview, face to face, Major Harris, Bill Elliott, and Richard Petty. From where I sit, there ain’t much better than those three interviews!
One thing that is better, though, is writing for the Lord. Nothing is more important, nothing is more needed, than clear proclaiming of biblical truth. The other matters hold temporary appeal. The word of God possesses eternal importance. I’m honored to tell the old, old story: the story of hope, the story of salvation, the story of Jesus and his love.
