Michael J. McDowell

Michael McDowell was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. A graduate of Stanford University, he completed a PhD at the University of Oregon with a dissertation on ecological views of landscape in American Literature. He taught literature and writing at Portland Community College for thirty-five years. He has published one previous book of poetry, The Hundred-Year House. From 2002 to 2022, with Bill Siverly he co-edited Windfall: A Journal of Poetry of Place, which featured poetry of the Pacific Northwest. He also edited the newsletter of Trailkeepers of Oregon. His prose about nature and landscape writing has appeared in the anthologies The Ecocriticism Reader (University of Georgia Press), Reading the Earth (University of Idaho Press), and Fifty Key Thinkers on the Environment (Routledge).
