Fred Bales, a professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico, has been retired since 2005 when he began volunteering at the Albuquerque Opportunity Center. His experiences there led to writing "Our Sheltered Lives."
His first book-length project was "Chilean Odyssey," a collection of letters written home by his wife, Jan, and him during their Peace Corps days in Chile.
His e-book novella, "Some Things Unsaid" is a mystery surrounding a small-town Midwestern lawyer. Although set in the 1950s, the book treats an issue that continues to cause controversy in American society.
Dr. Bales' tenure at Xavier University of Louisiana led to writing a chapter in "Affirmed Action," an edited book about white faculty at black schools. Other academic assignments were at the University of Texas-Brownsville and the University of the Philippines and Santo Tomas University in Manila. He also was a reporter at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky.
