James Crowley

Over the past ten years, I have led a range of fascinating strategic projects for a range of the largest development and relief agencies such as World Vision, Plan International, VSO International (Voluntary Services Overseas), Amnesty International, CARE International, AMREF, Catholic Relief Services, International Rescue Committee (IRC), Habitat for Humanity, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Traidlinks.

In parallel with my on-going advisory work, I devote a considerable amount of time on new independent research pieces which aim to stimulate new management ideas around the effectiveness of large international NGOs, as well as new collaborative approaches between development and private sector organisations. The first of these was released in 2009 in collaboration with World Vision and Accenture Development Partnerships, titled “The Rubik’s cube of cross-sector collaboration”. This can be downloaded from the website [www.thecrowleyinstitute.com].

My first book, “Building a Better International NGO” in association with Morgana Ryan, is the latest result of this on-going effort. After feedback from the first book, Morgana and I embarked on additional research work, now published as "Navigating Change for International NGOs".

Prior to 2005, I worked with Accenture for seventeen years, and was a partner in its strategic consulting practice based out of London, leading a range of strategy and organisation change assignments for energy, consumer products, high tech and public sector companies, including major international clients such as SmithKline Beecham, Hewlett Packard, Shell, British Gas, as well as several large international energy companies. I led Accenture’s strategy practice in the United Kingdom and Ireland and was also responsible for Accenture’s Mergers and Acquisitions and practice across Europe.

Before 1989, I worked as an engineer in the offshore oil and gas sector. I hold a degree in Engineering from University College Cork in Ireland, a Master’s degree in offshore engineering from University College London and a Master of Business Administration from London Business School.
