Tom Guthrie has been working as a cultural anthropologist in northern New Mexico since 2002. He was drawn to New Mexico by its complicated double colonial history and its promotion of cultural diversity, especially through tourism and museums. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and is a professor of sociology and anthropology at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
