Neil Cohn

Neil Cohn Ph.D. is an award winning American cognitive scientist best known for his pioneering research on the cognition of comics and language for over 20 years. On this topic, he has written over 100 academic papers and 7 academic books, including the 2021 Eisner-nominated Who Understands Comics? (2020).

Having started working in the US comic industry as a teenager, he has also drawn 3 graphic novels, and is the co-creator of numerous emoji, including 😮‍💨🫥🫠🥹🫨. His book, Speaking in Pictures, is an accessible graphic novel that introduces his academic research to a wide audience.

He is currently an Associate Professor of Cognition and Communication at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands.
