Barry L. Dorr

Barry Dorr is an electrical engineer working for a San Diego avionics manufacturer. He holds BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer. He has developed numerous products using analog and digital signal processing and has obtained eight US patents. As a boy, Mr. Dorr bought an old worn out truck from a Southern California orange grower which became a rolling laboratory for numerous high-school and college projects involving electronics, heat transfer, engine control, and troubleshooting. Working on the truck left him with a lifelong fascination with all things electrical, mechanical, and mathematical. One motivation for writing is to show readers how to use fundamental engineering concepts to do practical and seemingly complex designs. The other motivation is to share the simple enjoyment of designing things, building them, and watching them work. In addition to the textbook “Ten Essential Skills for Electrical Engineers,” Mr. Dorr writes lighter technical material such as "The Relationship between Digital Filters and Maintaining Your Front Yard" (Electronic Design News, December, 2013) and “Me and My Car” (Hemming’s Sports and Exotics, February 2014.
