Cynthia Rowe Writing Bio

Cynthia Rowe is Editor: Haiku Xpressions; Past President: Australian Haiku Society; Past President: Eastern Suburbs (Bondi Writers) Fellowship of Australian Writers NSW. She has a degree from the University of Melbourne and has taught French and English in Victoria and New South Wales. She has spent time in France and the French Territories and was awarded a Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française by the French Ministry of Education. She is a Writing Fellow of the Fellowship of Australian Writers NSW.

Her short stories have appeared in magazines such as Woman’s Day, That’s Life!, Tarralla 5, Signatures, Positive Words, Blue Crow Magazine, Alliance Française Magazine, Writers Voice, and been broadcast on National Community Radio. Her play ‘Not the Vice-Chancellor’ was performed in the Sydney Short and Sweet Festival 2008.

Cynthia has published seven novels: ‘Our Hollow Sofa’ (2004); ‘Ants in My Dreadlocks’ (2005) [runner-up Society of Women Writers NSW 2007 Biennial Book Awards]; ‘Stinger in a Sugar Jar’ (2007); ‘Bad Grass’ (2009) [Second Prize Junior Fiction Society of Women Writers NSW 2011 Biennial Book Awards]; ‘My French Barrette’ (2012); general fiction novel ‘Couscous Threads’ (2008) [Highly Commended Society of Women Writers NSW 2009 Biennial Book Awards.]; ‘Pennyweight Flat’ (2013). Her poetry collection ‘Driftwood’ was published by Ginninderra Press (2010). Her haiku collection ‘Floating Nest’ won First Prize in The Society of Women Writers NSW 2016 Book Awards.

Cynthia’s poetry can be read in numerous literary journals in Australia and overseas. Her English-language Japanese genre poetry and other poetic forms have won a number of awards including the Polish International Haiku Competition 2011; the Paper Wasp Jack Stamm Award 2011; the City of Perth Library Haiku Competition 2012; Top Prize 66th Matsuo Basho Festival Haiku Contest 2012; 1st Prize European Quarterly Kukai VIII Edition Winter 2014; Grand Prize: First Place 2015 World Haiku Contest; First Prize The Society of Women Writers NSW ‘Dame Mary Gilmore Poetry Award 2015
