Michele Robecchi

Michele Robecchi is a curator and writer based in London. He studied at the School of Design and Creative Arts at Loughborough University and at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan where he obtained a BA in Theater Design and a MA in Curating.

From 2000 through 2004 he was Managing Editor at Flash Art magazine in Milan. He then worked as Senior Editor at Contemporary Magazine in London from 2005 through 2007.

Since 2012, he is the Commissioning Editor of Phaidon Press’ Contemporary Artists Series, where he edited monographs on artists such as Monica Bonvicini, Lynda Benglis, Elmgreen & Dragset, Theaster Gates, Sam Gilliam, Shilpa Gupta, Cameron Jamie, Chris Johanson, Rashid Johnson, Sharon Hayes, Jannis Kounellis, Yayoi Kusama, Kerry James Marshall, Wangechi Mutu, Yoko Ono, Nicolas Party, Adam Pendleton, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, Ugo Rondinone, Sterling Ruby, Lorna Simpson, Frank Stella, Jessica Stockholder, Sarah Sze, Bernar Venet and Yin Xiuzhen among others. He also helped shaping titles such as "AdR Book: Beyond Fashion" (2018); "Collision, Innovation, Interaction: Korean Art since 1953" (2020); "The Kitchen Studio: Culinary Creations by Artists" (2021) and "Ferrari: Under the Skin" (2017) in collaboration with the Design Museum in London.

He is the author, together with Francesca Bonazzoli, of "Mona Lisa to Marge: How the World’s Greatest Artworks Entered Popular Culture" (2014) and "Portraits Unmasked: The Stories Behind the Faces" (2020) as well as catalogue essays for solo or group exhibitions in international museums and galleries. He is the author of monographs on the work of Sarah Lucas (2007), Robin Rhode (2016) and Kerry James Marshall (2025).

He has lectured at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, the Bezalel Academy of Fine Art in Tel Aviv, the Durham University, the École National des Beaux Arts in Grenoble, the University of Art in Newcastle, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare, the Kingston University, the Metropolitan University and the Royal Art College in London, the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven and other academic institutions. From 2006 to 2016 he was a visiting lecturer at Christie’s Education in London.

He has organised exhibitions in Berlin, Geneva, London, Milan, New York, Paris and Zurich. He was one of the co-curators of the first two editions of the Tirana Biennale (2001 and 2003) and a member of the selection committee for the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2017 and 2019).
