Ranjan Ramasamy

Ranjan Ramasamy was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1949. His father was a scientist in the World Health and Food and Agriculture Organisations of the United Nations and a University Professor, and his mother a teacher. Ranjan attended school at Royal College, Colombo, and the Perse School, Cambridge, England and then obtained a degree in Natural Sciences and PhD from the University of Cambridge, England. He was a Professor of Immunology, Biochemistry and Life Sciences, with research and teaching experience in Australia, Brunei, England, Kenya, Sri Lanka and the United States. Ranjan has authored 150 original research articles and many other publications in Basic Immunology, Malaria, Vaccines, Cancer Immunology, Biotechnology and Mosquito Vector Biology. He was the former Chairman of the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka, an author of a Science and Technology Report for the Government of Sri Lanka, a member of the Governing Board of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and the Committee on Scientific Planning and Review of the International Council for Science (ICSU)and a representative for Sri Lanka at UNESCO board meetings. He was elected a Visiting Fellow at St. Edmund's College, Cambridge. As a result of the extensive and possibly unique international experience, Ranjan has had a long standing general interest in global affairs and recently coordinated an inter-faculty course on Sustainable Development for undergraduates in Brunei. Ranjan now lives in Northwood, England and has two daughters Maheshi (a medical specialist in infectious diseases) and Radha.
