Nicholas Hartlep

Nicholas D. Hartlep, PhD, is an award-winning author, researcher, professor, and editor whose work examines education, leadership, equity, belonging, and the experiences of historically marginalized communities. Before transitioning to full time professional writing, consulting, and research he held the Robert Charles Billings Endowed Chair in Education where he simultaneously chaired the Education Studies Department at Berea College from 2019–2026. Dr. Hartlep has authored or edited more than 26 books and has received multiple national book and leadership awards. A former urban elementary school teacher and longtime professor and academic leader, Hartlep brings a P–20 perspective to his scholarship and writing. He currently serves as Researcher-In-Residence with the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity (BranchED). He is also the creator of The Book Doctor, where he helps readers discover books worth reading and helps writers move from idea to manuscript to published book.
