Luke McEwen

Luke McEwen was born in Chichester, West Sussex, in 1964. He spent four years of his childhood in Freeport, New York, and eighteen months in Brussels, where he attended the Common Market School, before returning to his hometown nine years later in 1973. He continues to live and work in Chichester.

At the University of East Anglia, he studied Politics and Sociology, which fed his thirst for understanding culture, society and why people do what they do. He also attended creative writing courses at Chichester College and West Dean College.

Luke is a keen potter and painter and, more recently, has begun to learn glass lamp work. He enjoys playing racquet sports and the saxophone. When away from Chichester, he’s probably finding inspiration for the next poem or novel whilst touring Europe on his motorbike, his wife, Jo, riding pillion, and with all they need for a couple of months stowed away in panniers.

He spent five years volunteering as a Samaritan, which he found to be an enormously enlightening and rewarding experience.

Luke writes about love in relationships, be that father and son, brother and sister, girlfriend and boyfriend, cat and owner. ‘Relationships are fascinating: why we choose who we do, why some relationships are blessed with harmony, others loveless and dull. How some couples support and nurture one another, how others tear each other apart. We’re all different and there are infinite ways to how we relate.’

He has a deep interest in the study of practical philosophy and has been a student of The School of Philosophy and Economic Science for several years. “Practical philosophy is a way of drawing on the wisdom of ancient and contemporary philosophers to find ways of adapting one’s outlook and habits to bring greater harmony and contentment to one’s life.”
