Mark Kamena is a licensed psychologist in California and was born in Oakland, CA in 1948. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1969. He was a police officer in Berkeley in 1969 and 1970, then was awarded his Masters in Criminology in 1971. His wife Paula, in addition to her law degree, also has a Masters in Criminology that she earned in 1970. They have been married for 45 years and she is the retired District Attorney from Marin County California. Mark is an oral examiner for the American Board of Professional Psychology in Police and Public Safety, and a member of the ethics committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Psychology Services Section. He is a co-founder of the West Coast Posttrauma Retreat (WCPR2001.org) and the treatment program for Significant Others and Spouses (SOS) of first responders (FRSN.org), and is a lead clinician at both. All staff members (peers, clinicians and chaplains) at these retreats are volunteers. He is the 2013 President of the California Psychological Association and has served on their board of directors for the past ten years. He is currently developing an assessment instrument that has been normed on over 500 first responders and will enable clinicians to examine stress associated with critical incidents and symptoms that the responders are currently experiencing.
