Like many Australians, British-born Tasmanian writer, Hilary Burden, is a hybrid: a blend of two cultures which she chooses to interrogate deeply through her passion for nature, food and gardens.
Hilary has worked as a writer and editor for leading publications in both Sydney and London, and as a broadcaster in Tasmania. She has a Diploma in Gender, Society and Culture from the University of London, and a BA in English & Politics from the University of Tasmania.
Her best-selling memoir A Story of Seven Summers - Life in the Nuns' House was published in 2012.
In 2021 she was a judge for the Tasmanian Writers’ Prize and in 2023 for The Walkley Young Journalist of the Year.
Most recently, Hilary co-authored the cookbook How Wild Things Are, and Visionary – Gardens and Landscapes for our Future with Claire Takacs.
Her latest book Undersong – A Tasmanian journey into Country, encourages us to pause and listen while confronting the difficult terrain that is living on unceded lands in Australia.
