Kevin Berland

Kevin Joel Berland is Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at Penn State.

He studied at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. As a researcher and writer, his interests are focused on early modern intellectual history and literature. He has written numerous scholarly articles on various subjects, including the English poet John Dryden, the essays of Francis Bacon, the novels of Henry Fielding, the first Canadian novelist Frances Brooke, 18th-century newspaper poetry in Dublin, early American diaries, the reputation of the philosopher Socrates in early modern letters up to 1800, the formal techniques of poetry, and the history of physiognomy (the ancient pseudoscience of character analysis based on facial structure).
