For over 35 years, Thomas V. Getchell, Ph.D. and Marilyn L. Getchell, Ph.D. enjoyed successful careers as research neuroscientists and educators. Their interest in Civil War history was ignited when they inherited letters written by Orrin L. Gatchell, a private in the Union Army, who was Tom’s great-grandfather. Drawing upon their skills as published scholars, they have integrated historical, political, social and genealogical perspectives into a unique view of one soldier’s experiences on the battlefields of the Virginia campaigns based on Orrin’s firsthand accounts. The Getchells, who have two sons and two granddaughters, pursue their activities in Lexington, Kentucky and Longboat Key, Florida.
