Maria Barroso

Maria do Sameiro Barroso is a Portuguese Medicine Doctor, a poet, translator, Medicine History researcher, Director of the Department of History of Medicine of the Portuguese Medical Association since 2012, a Researcher of the Lisbon National Museum of Archeology, and advisory board member of scientific books and journals. She has published and edited about fifty books of poetry and translations and literary essays. She is the editor of the literary journal “Espaço do Ser – Poesia, Tradução e Ensaio”. Her poetry is translated into over twenty languages. Her main research fields are Portuguese and German Literature, Gender Studies, Ancient Medicine, Roman Surgical Instruments, Ancient Gynecology and Obstetrics, Gender Studies, Bezoar Stones and Ancient Materia Medica. She published over 50 articles and chapters on History of Medicine, Ancient History, and Archaeology in Portuguese, English, Russian and Croatian scientific books and journals. Vice-President of the 46th ISHM Congress.
