James Sterngold is a Senior Writer for the Wall Street
Journal, where he reports on finance and business. Jim
previously spent eighteen years at the New York Times, as
a domestic reporter and foreign correspondent, based in Asia.
He shared in a Pulitzer Prize, awarded to the Times staff
for its coverage of 9/11. He has also written for Fortune,
Bloomberg Businessweek, Mother Jones, and SmartMoney
magazines. Jim won the Foreign Press Association's
award for Best Magazine Financial Article of 2010 and
the Magazine Personal Service Award from the Deadline
Club in 2012. He is also the author of the book "Burning
Down the House: How Greed, Deceit, and Bitter Revenge
Destroyed E. F. Hutton."
Paul A. Marks, MD, led the Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center as President and Chief Executive Officer
for nineteen years, beginning in 1980. Prior to his tenure
at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Dr. Marks was professor
of human genetics and Frode Jensen Professor of
Medicine (1968-1980), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine
(1970-1973), and Vice President for Health Sciences and
Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (1973-
1980) at Columbia University. Dr. Marks is a member
of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute
of Medicine, is a fellow at the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences, and for more than 40 years has advised the government on
science and health research policy. He has published
more than 400 scientific articles and received the National
Medal of Science from President George H.W.
Bush in 1991. Memorial Sloan-Kettering has established
the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research, given to up to three young leaders in cancer research to encourage a new generation of investigators.
