Paul is a Fulbright Scholar and Alumnus of University College Dublin, Ohio State and MIT. He served on the academic staff at UCD from 1972 through 2005. After retirement, he studied Genealogy/Family History and Creative Writing. His diploma project, The Genealogy of the Anglo-Norman Lynches who settled in Galway, led to the discovery of a treasure-trove of stories that inspired the author to write historical novels based on real events in 18th century Ireland. These include "Spellbound by Sibella," "The Abduction of Anne O’Donel" and "A Story of the Bodkin Murders" each published by Club Lighthouse CLP, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The first two novels have been finalists in the William Faulkner Novel Competitions, New Orleans in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
He has also self-published "The Genealogy of the Anglo-Norman Lynches who settled in Galway" in 2013 and a novella, "A Rebel Romance" in 2014, both with CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform.
His literary experience inspired him to write plays based on extracts from his writing. UCD Dramatic Society included a reading of his play “Spellbound by Sibella” in their Theatre Festival in November 2014. In October 2015, it received favourable reviews from the Theatre Development Centre, Cork, The Abbey Theatre and Papatango Theatre Company, London. In response to a call from the UCD Dramsoc Mini Plays Festival, Paul submitted a five-minute play “Elopement” which was staged on 14-16 October 2015.
His second play was inspired by his novel “The Abduction of Anne O’Donel”. His third play “1798: A Rebel Romance” was staged by UCD Dramsoc on 18-22 April 2016. His fourth play, “The Bodkin Murders,” is written in the format of a court-room drama. His most recent play, “Hijinks in Hibernia,” is a modernized adaptation of his first play. Members of The Corner Table writers group, of which Paul is a founding member, have critiqued each scene of each of his plays.
Two of his plays, “1798: A Rebel Romance” (2016) and “Spellbound by Sibella” (2017) have been published with CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform and by StagePlays.com. Both are listed on Doollee.com.
He has recently published “A Girl Called May” a biography of his aunt, Margaret Mary ‘May’ McNulty who trained as a singer in Milan and played international bridge for Ireland.
Paul lives in Dublin with his wife, three children, two granddaughters and a grandson. The wild splendour of Mayo and Connemara inspires his writing. Links to social media include Facebook and Twitter. His website address is http://paul-mcnulty.com.
