Christopher Joll

Educated at Oxford University and the RMA Sandhurst, Christopher Joll was commissioned into The Life Guards in 1968 and served four tours of duty in Northern Ireland. Since leaving the Army in 1975, Christopher has been involved in devising, writing, directing and/or producing fund raising events for charities nclude José Carreras & Friends at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Household Cavalry Pageant, the Royal Hospital Chelsea Pageant, the Diamond Jubilee Parade in the Park, the British Military Tournament, the Gurkha Pageant, The Patron’s Lunch and The Great War Symphony. Christopher’s most recent work for charity has been the writing, directing and presenting of five short films, collectively titled Thinking Outside the Box, featuring commercial excellence in selected museums. The films were made on behalf of the Museum Prize Trust and funded by Arts Council England. When not engaged in writing, directing and producing charitable events, Christopher is an historian and writer of ‘faction’. He has published Uniquely British: A Year in the Life of the Household Cavalry, an illustrated book with a Foreword by HM The Queen; The Drum Horse in the Fountain: Tales of the Heroes & Rogues in the Guards, published by Nine Elms Books, who will be publishing in early 2020 Christopher’s Spoils of War: The Treasures, Trophies & Trivia of the British Empire, a history covering some of the thousands of objects acquired during the building of the British Empire, with a Foreword by the Duke of Wellington and which has been endorsed by Michael Portillo and Philip Mould. Christopher is currently writing, again for Nine Elms Books, a second volume of Guards stories to be titled Sparta’s Children: More Tales of the Heroes & Rogues in the Guards, for publication in early 2021 with a Foreword by the Duke of Northumberland. In addition, Christopher publishes on a regular basis historical articles for national and regional magazines, contributed a 10,000-word essay on the history of the horse in Britain for Equine Journeys, published in October 2018 by Transglobe Publishing, and writes articles and book reviews for The Guards Magazine. Since 1st April 2013, Christopher has also published a nine volume series of 19th/20th century military-historical action-adventure stories known as The Speedicut Papers, which have been featured in The Times and recommended by Stephen Fry and a follow-on series, The Speedicut Memoirs, Book 4 of which will be published in late 2019 (see: www.amazon.co.uk). Christopher is a lecturer for Noble Caledonia and Viking cruises. He also speaks regularly at clubs, museums and Literary Festivals on the subjects covered by his books. In addition, Christopher is a podcaster who has, to date, broadcast more than 40 programmes (www.christopherjoll.libsyn.com) and is currently in early-stage discussion with Classic FM about writing and presenting a new series of podcasts for the radio station. Christopher is currently Regimental Historian of the Household Cavalry and a Trustee of the Museum Prize Trust (www.museumprizetrust.org.uk).
