Odon (Don) Bacque came of age during the Vietnam War, but never imagined himself to ever be a part of it. As he merrily enjoyed his studies and parties at LSU, Vietnam was the furthest thing from his mind. Why? Because he was considered legally blind without glasses; but correctable to 20/20 with them. Why would the army take a blind man?
Not only was he taken, but despite his aversion to dying in war, he also became an infantry officer and a Green Beret.
The journey from carefree college student to a year in Vietnam with the Green Berets is humorous in itself, but the day to day pranks and shenanigans of young men playing in a war zone is entertaining and comedic.
His experience is in no way trying to make light of war, it is simply to tell his story, certainly a unique one. He was fortunate and realizes it. But sometimes good fortune can lend a different perspective on a difficult time. This story attempts to do that.
