David Chaltas is an educator with over thirty-eight years of service to troubled youth. In the Summer of 2001, he was selected Teacher of the Year by the Kentucky Council of Children with Behavioral Disorders. He is the first recipient of the prestigious award in the state of Kentucky. His innovative Alternative Education and Day Treatment Program won the coveted 2000-2001 Program of the Year by the International Association of Directors of Pupil Personnel. The program has been a model for several other facilities within the region. Mr. Chaltas also served as an EBD Consultant for the state of Kentucky.
Mr. Chaltas spent over six years working on Native American reservations in Arizona, New Mexico and the four-corner area. He also served at Friendship services out of Gallup, New Mexico, where he worked with alcoholism. He has also taught at the college level to keep his ‘balance’ and is a nationally recognized living historian.
He is one of Kentucky’s most prolific authors with over sixty-eight books to his credit and over four hundred articles on his resume. His articles have appeared in periodicals such as Kentucky Explorer, Civil War Courier, Citizen, Camp Chase Gazette, Timelines, News Press, Mountain Eagle, to name a few. He has over four hundred Christian lessons for life published on line and in print.
He is a sought-after motivational speaker who shares his experiences to educators, churches, clubs, civil organizations, reenactments, heritage groups across this great nation. He has traveled extensively signing books and offering presentations in several states (Texas to Maryland as well as Michigan to Florida). He has appeared on radio talk shows, TV interviews, documentaries and most recently, portrayed General Lee in the forthcoming movie entitled, ‘Into the Wilderness’. When asked what his greatest honor was, Mr. Chaltas stated that it was serving his country. “Being a soldier was the catalyst to my defining who I am. I consider it to have been my time of rediscovery.”
